Specialist Medical Scientist

The Pathology Department in TippUH is a multi disciplinary laboratory, comprising of Blood Transfusion, Haematology and Clinical Biochemistry departments, as well as providing an external test referral service to other laboratories. The Pathology department is led by the Chief Medical Scientist, with a team of scientific & support staff. It provides a clinical diagnostic service in Blood Transfusion, Haematology and Biochemistry for TippUH inpatients, as well as a Haematology and Biochemistry service for local GPs and nursing homes.

The Blood Transfusion Laboratory has been accredited by the Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB) since April 2009 and thus complies fully with the requirements set out in Articles 14 and 15 of EU Directive 2002/98/EC and Statutory Instruments No. 360 of 2005, and No. 547 of 2006.

A routine service is provided Monday to Friday 08.00am to 08.00pm. An emergency on call service is provided at all other times. The Pathology Department is committed to providing a timely and efficient diagnostic service to all patients, clinicians and other users. It aims at all times to ensure that this service is of a standard required to achieve maximum patient benefit. The laboratory is committed to good professional practice and to achieve a quality of service that is compliant with the international standard ISO 15189.
